Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2026
TiltSync is designed with privacy in mind. We believe you should be able to use tools without surrendering your personal data.
Data We Collect
Short answer: Almost nothing.
TiltSync does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on external servers. All data processing happens entirely on your device.
Sensor & Location Data
TiltSync uses the following device sensors:
- Accelerometer — to measure your device's tilt angle
- Magnetometer — to determine compass heading
- GPS/Location — to calculate optimal panel angles based on your latitude
By default, this data is:
- Processed entirely on your device
- Never transmitted to any external server
- Cached locally (for up to 24 hours) to enable faster app startup
- Never shared with third parties
Exception: If you enable the optional "PVWatts Live" feature, limited location data is shared with NREL as described below.
No Account Required
TiltSync does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information to use the app.
No Analytics or Tracking
We do not use any analytics services, crash reporting tools, or advertising SDKs that track your behavior.
Local Storage
TiltSync stores the following data locally on your device:
- Your theme preference (dark/light/auto)
- Your selected calculation algorithm
- PVWatts Live enabled/disabled setting (disabled by default)
- Cached GPS location (expires after 24 hours)
- Cached PVWatts API results, if enabled (expires after 24 hours)
This data never leaves your device and can be cleared by uninstalling the app.
Third-Party Services: PVWatts Live (Optional)
TiltSync includes an optional feature called "PVWatts Live" that connects to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) PVWatts API to calculate industry-standard optimal tilt angles. This feature is:
- Disabled by default — you must explicitly enable it in Settings
- Opt-in only — TiltSync never sends location data unless you enable this feature
What data is sent?
When PVWatts Live is enabled and you request a calculation, TiltSync sends:
- Latitude and longitude — rounded to 2 decimal places (~1.1 km / 0.7 miles precision)
- No other data — no device identifiers, no personal information, no usage data
This reduced precision means the API receives your approximate area, not your exact address. For example, coordinates 40.7128, -74.0060 (New York City) would be sent as 40.71, -74.01.
How is this data used?
NREL uses your approximate location to:
- Look up historical solar irradiance data for your geographic region
- Calculate the optimal panel tilt angle that would maximize annual energy production
- Return an estimated optimal tilt angle to the app
The calculation is performed by testing multiple tilt angles against NREL's solar database and returning the angle with the highest simulated energy output for your region.
Who is NREL?
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. Their PVWatts calculator is the industry-standard tool used by solar professionals worldwide. You can review NREL's API documentation and their privacy and security policies.
Data retention
- TiltSync caches PVWatts results locally on your device for 24 hours to minimize API calls
- TiltSync does not store any record of API requests
- NREL's data retention policies apply to requests made to their servers — please refer to their privacy policy
Children's Privacy
TiltSync does not knowingly collect any information from children. The app is rated 4+ and contains no objectionable content.
